MINISTER MACKAY ANNOUNCES SUPPORT TO HOST THE 2012 CANADA 55+ GAMES
SYDNEY (NS) – February 8, 2012 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, announced today a contribution from the Government of Canada for the Canada 55+ Games, that will bring athletes from across Canada to Cape Breton from August 29 to September 1, 2012.
“Our Government’s priority is the economy and I am proud to announce funds intended to strengthen the economy, create jobs and encourage physical activity,” said Minister MacKay, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and La Francophonie. “Attracting major sporting and cultural events such as these games to the Island encourages healthy, active living for all Canadians. Hosting the 2012 Canada 55+ Games, a national event, will have significant economic impact in our region.”
The Canada 55+ Games is a nation-wide program to sponsor wellness among Canadians 55 years of age and older. It is the largest multi-sport event for the 55+ demographic in Canada. Held every two years, the Games encourage healthy, active living through both active and passive games. Athletes qualify for this national event as a result of regional and provincial-level competitions.
Cape Breton successfully competed with other jurisdictions in Canada for the right to host the 2012 Games that will feature 23 sports and activities held over four days and attracting an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 participants.
“Hosting the Games in Cape Breton provides us with an opportunity to showcase the Island’s culture, history and beauty to athletes and their families,” said Beverly Patterson, Event Manager for the 2012 Canada 55 + Games.
The total cost of hosting the Games is estimated to be in excess of $700,000. ECBC is providing assistance in the amount of $150,000. The remainder of the funding will come from other levels of government, participant fees and corporate sponsorship.
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
