GOVERNMENT OF CANADA INVESTS IN COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE IN RURAL CAPE BRETON
MABOU (NS) – February 18, 2011 – A significant investment from the Government of Canada will assist the Strait-Highlands Regional Development Agency (RDA) to implement community revitalization programs in Mabou and in various communities along Cape Breton’s world-famous Cabot Trail.
“Our Government is working to create and sustain jobs for Canadians in all regions of the country.” said Senator Mike MacDonald on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “Through our support for projects across Cape Breton we are helping communities to build on local strengths to improve the economy and enhance the Island’s standing as a popular tourism destination.”
The Strait Highlands RDA, in cooperation with the Mabou and District Community Development Association, is undertaking the redevelopment of Mabou’s main street. The cost shared project will help local business owners significantly improve the attractiveness of the village’s streetscape. The total cost of the project is $1,074,220. The Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) is providing $701,720.
Working with the Cabot Trail Working Association, the RDA is also implementing a facade and streetscape improvement program in communities along the Cabot Trail in both Inverness and Victoria Counties. This initiative includes cost-shared improvements to building facades for participating businesses as well as signage and landscaping improvements. The total cost of the project is $1,274,584. The Government of Canada, through ECBC is providing $754,584.
“The Government of Canada’s contribution of over $1.4 million to community development initiatives in rural Cape Breton supports the vitality and growth of small businesses and the local tourism industry,” said Blaine Gillis, CEO of the Strait-Highlands RDA. “These projects will enhance the appeal of the region as a place to live, visit and invest in.”
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA's programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
